I first heard about Light from Uncommon Stars on the Incomparable podcast. This is a Hugo-nominated novel from author Ryka Aoki that is simply captivating. I would have read it in one sitting if my schedule had allowed.

The story brings together a violin teacher who has sold her soul for fame, a young transgender student of hers who is a music prodigy, and a family of aliens who happen to run a donut shop. It is a story of ambition and trauma, of healthy and unhealthy family relations, and it is a story of the transformative power of love.
